My tomatoes, eggplant, and zucchini loved the 5-1-1 containers they were growing in this season and did very well. However my two varieties of peppers (Early Sunsation Yellow Bell and Orange Blaze Bell) did not. I have only had a few of them turn color, the rest are all smallish, elongated in appearance and green. Are 10 gallon fabric containers not large enough for peppers? My tomatoes, eggplant and zucchini were all in 20 gallon containers. Did I not neglect to supplement extra nutrients that the other plants did not require? The foliage looks great, though at times I had to battle leaf munching critters by applying DE powder. Need some advice for next season or I may just stop wasting space in my garden.

That mix seems suited more to leaf crops. Fruiting plants like less nitrogen for fruit production. I burned my bell peppers with a similar ratio (but more concentrated).

5-1-1 refers to a homemade potting mix that's popular over on the container gardening forum. I believe it's 5 parts bark, 1 part peat, and 1 part perlite with some lime and fertilizer added. While I know the mix, I've never used it and I only rarely container garden. So I'm not sure what's up with your peppers. 10 gallon containers should be plenty big enough. Edited to add: It's possible that you are pampering them too much. I tend to neglect my peppers for the most part and they produce well. Maybe back off on the fertilizer a little. Rodney

Ah... that's confusing :)

Yes, the 5-1-1 refers to the growing mix, not the NPK ratio. I haven't pampered the peppers at all except to dust them with DE. The CRF that is in the 5-1-1 mix is all that was used to feed them (and the rest of my veggies).
