I purchased a start that was supposed to be an English cucumber, but it's not. I knew once it started blooming that it wasn't a cucumber, and now that it's fruiting I think it might be a pumpkin but I'm not sure. I just want to know what it is so that I know what to do with it. Thanks in advance!

I wish I could help but am piggybacking on your post for I have What was labeled a summer (yellow ) squash plant that has the shape of a butternut, pale greenish skin almost like the very pale watermelon skin. I cut it open and cooked it and while acceptable it doesn't really taste like what I am accustomed to. The skin is soft like a summer squash, but the inside looks like it could be turning orangish? I have never grown the buttercup, do they start out green and then " whiten" up? Might I have some type of gourd?

This must be the year for mislabeled plants! My "zucchini" is turning into a monster acorn squash that is "eating" everything in its path. Jeesh!!! (Good thing I only bought one and started everything else from seed!) Although I am no expert, I'd say that those do look like baby pumpkins. Got some good pie recipes? LOL!!! Edie

At least some time of round winter squash. Buttercup looks tlike that when young but with have a pronounced blossom scar. Kabochas will have same general shape but no blossom scar. If it ripens orange it will be one of the pumpkin types. Gourds( except the small ornamentals that are actually squash) will have white blossoms.

As long as I know that I can treat it like a winter squash I'm happy, I wasn't sure when to harvest. On a different note, are the blossoms edible like zucchini blossoms? They look pretty yummy to me...

These do have the blossom scar so I will just wait for them to mature... I am not really sorry I do love the buttercup and they keep so well through the winter. Luckily my son is getting a bumper crop of yellow summer squash. :)
