Artichoke Help

newbie-g

I have one artichoke plant that became heavily infested with aphids and then ants. We were on vacation and were shocked upon returning to see the limp state of the plant.
I was advised to cut back plant, and give it a chance to grow again. I'm not certain that this was the right thing to do, but it looked so sickly and weak that I thought it might help. So now there is a big stump/stalk in the bed and I am not certain if I have killed it or if it will come back. Any advice?
