| Personally, I'm always giving stuff away! In fact today is "Leave a zucchini on your neighbors' porch Day" Where I live, we give bags and bags of stuff to each other! One neighbor has several fruit trees that feeds 4 households, I have tomatoes, eggplant, cherry tomatoes, zuks etc etc etc. I freeze some and share some. I think the only summer thing I don't share are tomatillos. Gotta make and freeze the sauce! I'm all about sharing, BUT if you don't want to share, just tell them you've already tossed them in the freezer. Nuff said. Nancy |

| At least they asked--DH went over to our community garden plot today to grab a pair of toms that we had left to ripen and....nowhere to be found. I hate it when my maters walk off on their own. |

| I don't mind sharing when I have a surplus and it is fun to swap if I did well in one crop and someone else did well in something else. I even give extras to others without receiving anything and enjoy it, part of the fun of gardening. But I don't like it when people put others on the spot. If they want it, why don't they grow it themselves? Have to agree with ltilton. They are never around when we are weeding, watering etc. in the rain and in the heat. You feel like if you say no, they might get offended or come steal it when you're not around. balloonflower, I can understand your pain. I garden at a community garden too. People just help themselves. |

I tried to organize my neighborhood so we wouldn't all be growing the same things. ended up with most of my stuff gone ."One even went so far as to ask "Can you pick some and bring them by the house??" can I have some mangoes Guava. sure but just take the very ripe ones Took them all . even a few branches .!!! Offered some to the food bank." Please put them in around two pound bags and deliver them to the stations"lol I now sic my dog on anyone who gets near the garden!!! lol gary |

| I give stuff away when I have surplus, and when I don't, I tell people I'm canning/freezing it. Early last spring a neighbor asked me if she could cut some of my Iris reticulate for her table. I simply said no. They were the only thing in bloom in the entire garden. |

| I think a courteous way for a guest to handle this is to admire the tomatoes 'Your tomatoes are so pretty, they must take a lot of work to grow'. That leaves the door open, if there is an excess, and it is an unwanted excess, the hostess can offer, if nothing is said about an offer the guest has, perfectly appropriately, given a compliment. Dealing with someone who asks, a simple 'no' is always good, or just say your are fixing to use them in a sauce and salsa recipe. |

| Funny, I'm always thrilled when someone admires and desires my hard-grown produce. I also have no problem saying no if that's what I want to say. |
