| I understood that you harvest broccoli rabe when the buds begin to appear. By "buds" that means the broccoli-looking parts, correct? If so, my 6 inch high plants have them. Did something go wrong? Should i cut them now at the bases (and cook them) before they flower and hope another batch comes in? |

Broocoli Raab(Rapini) is close kin to a turnip ( same species) and more distantly related to broccoli. Like broccoli it is prized for its flower heads, unlike broccoli the major part of the plant is used. Should look something like this when harvested.  A cool weather vegetable usually grown in early spring. Yours may be suffering heat stress. |

| thanks! it does look similar to that minus that the stems are not that thick. (as are the ones in the supermarket.) When I was out there watering, I think maybe they are closer to 8-9 inches tall, not 6. It almost looks like a baby version of what you posted. thinner stalks, smaller heads. Should I be worried though that it will flower? The heads seem to just have come out because today is the 1st day I noticed them. where do i cut it? all the way near the ground or do i leave some stalks? Also- I just planted it 28 days ago thinking it will be ready for fall (sept) but it sprouted/grew so quickly... |

Wait until the buds are almost ready to pop open, then cut as much of the plant as you need for the specific dish you wish to prepare. The amount of green needed will vary with the dish. Burpee recomends cutting 6 inch pieces. The plant is supposed to get 2 -3 feet high. |

| thanks farmerdill, ok then maybe there is some hope. i thought as soon as you saw those buds, they needed to be cut or they would flower. looks like i have some time and maybe they will make it to a foot or so. only some have the buds too, but i imagine the rest will start to get them. |

| So where exactly do I cut them? an inch from the ground? or how much from the ground? Where the stalks split? After? |

| 6 inches from the top of the bud. should leave you plenty of plant to regenerate. |
