Can you freeze watermelons

After giving away over 30 melons, I still have them
coming out of my ying yang. Is it possible to freeze
watermelon meat? It would be nice to enjoy some of this
harvest during the winter.

You CAN freeze it, but it's not going to taste great or maintain its texture once thawed. If you just want to use it in smoothies or something, as opposed to eating it as you would a fresh melon, it might be ok, but it's going to be pretty pulpy.

Like all melons, watermelon will not freeze for satisfactory eating as though you'd just harvested it -- too watery and not enough substance to maintain its shape and texture through freezing.

But I freeze both cantaloupes and watermelons cut into chunks and use them to make winter smoothies with whatever other fruit I can find, good with bananas and canned pineapple. They certainly add a delicious touch of summer that way to your winter eating!

I just froze some cantaloupe, defrosted it and ate it today.

Bad idea.

Taste was there, but texture was way, way, crazy way off.

In a bad way.

I should have either eaten it frozen like a popsicle or blended them like anney said.

It is possible - comes up for discussion on the Harvest Forum now and then - but not really desirable as others have said.

Still if you want to try it I have linked the approved instructions for to do it below. Some care required because it is so low acid.

Dave

PS: Whatever you do don't try dehydrating it. It grows so much bacteria in the time it takes to dry it that it can make you sick as a dog!!

Seems like it would be best to puree it in a blender and freeze it that way, to use in smoothies, sorbets, etc.

RE: Can you freeze watermelons

They sell frozen mixed fruit which contains melon balls - cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon - along with berries and usually peach or nectarine slices.

The key to eating it, as stated above, is to do so in a still partially frozen state. It's slimy and pretty bad when thawed. Much better frozen.

You can also make a number of watermelon based goodies, sorbet and popsicles/fruit bars out of it.

Believe it or not, watermelon and other melons are actually pretty good when dehydrated, although it takes a LONG time and the yield, for obvious reasons, is very small compared with what you start with.

Then there's always watermelon rind pickles. Remember those?

you can make a sorbet from the watermelon and then freeze the sorbet.
