Is this compost?

A tree fell in my back yard and it has this black thing inside it. It has worms in it and looks like compost. Could I use it to fertilize my tomato and pepper plants?

No it isn't compost in the normal sense of the word as it has only one ingredient - wood. It is basically wood humus (rotted wood) and its nutrient value is minimal. It won't hurt anything but it won't do much positive either.

Please keep in mind the even compost, true compost, contains low levels of nutrients and require an active soil food web to make them useful to the plants. So compost is primarily a soil amendment, not a "fertilizer".

You can learn much more about this over on the Soil & Compost forum here.

That's strange stuff. I guess before I put that on my plants, I might like to think about what that tree died from. For example, fungal blight detritus is not something I'd want to spread around on my veggies.

You might want to let it "age" for a year or two, maybe in a real compost pile.

i'd be careful, because there is a good a chance that disease caused that tree to die. I would leave it be.
