Sudden zuchini death

We were out of town for a few days and came back to a couple huge zuks and a few smaller ones (which we picked, cause we were leaving for a few more days).
I watered before we left, but came back to mostly dead zuk and crookneck squash! We don't get SVB here as far as I know (No Ca, north of SF, Meditaranian area) and usually end up with PM and the plants die at first frost.
There is a small area that has small leaves and some flowers, but the main plant is yellow and failing.
Any ideas? Nancy

RE: Sudden zuchini death

Hi- I thought somebody else would have responded by now, but I suspect you have squash vine borer. The second year I gardened, I had two zucchini plants, and they were both doing fine, and then one weekend I went away, and when I came back to my garden on Monday, one of my zucchini plants was dead. The next weekend I went away again, and when I came back the same thing happened to the second zucchini plant. The only sure fire solution to the problem is to stagger your plantings. Plant one plant, and then a month later plant a second one. In the Chicago area anyway, usually vine borers are much more prevalent in June, and so if you time your second planting so it matures in July, you usually won't have vine borer problems.

Can anything tunnel under the roots? I've lost squash to moles before, just from extrnsive tunneling under their roots in the heat of summer.

nfriday- As I said in my OP, I don't think we have SVB here in CA.
Sunni and Rodney, all of my beds are raised and lined with hardware cloth (gophers). I didn't see any gopher action, but I'll look around for others. I've never seen evidence of moles in the last 30 years here, but maybe voles? I have a lot of garden cats, but I'll look around! Nancy

Any evident signs of stem rot?
