Backyard Soil

I have been looking into gardening
for quite some time now and I was wondering if I could use the soil in my backyard which is currently growing grass weads and such?

Ps
I read in the FAQ that you have to test your soil, is this like absolutely mandatory? I highly doubt that people back in the day had labs to test the soil lol

Thank you for your help.

RE: Backyard Soil

Iv never tested my soils when i shift into a new house, just turn the soil and dig in the sod. Plant your plants and they will tell you how your soil is. Just remember to keep adding compost and manures to keep building up a great soil. Its not rocket science just good old common sense.
