Weevil in stored popcorn

I'm starting to harvest this year's popcorn and I do not want to get weevil in it, like I did last year. I used ziplock bags last year -- the kind with the tab that helps close the bag. I wonder if that zipper thing left an opening for the weevil to get in; what do you think?

I've added a picture of my last bag of 2013 popcorn. I put a different kind of zip lock bag on the left. It has two seals. Do you think that would solve the problem. The weevils didn't show up for maybe 8 months. They are little black insects, which pictures found via Google images suggest are indeed weevil, and the damage isn't noticeable to me. I just don't want them in my pantry and I use the popcorn mainly for my 2nd grade Sunday school class, and I don't want them finding a weevil in their popcorn!

I could just put the 2014 crop into bags and then into the freezer if that would be a better approach. What do you think?

Thanks, Tim

I would freeze it.

They often "get in" because the eggs are on the seeds when you put the seeds in the bag. If they were on the outside of the bag, they would chew through the plastic to get in.

After freezing your seed to kill eggs & any larvae, store them in a glass container with a secure lid which has a gasket.

Yea, If you're gonna eat em, freeze the dried seed for a day or more...

Freezing would be really easy, and if it did not have to be in the freezer long term, then it could be taken out if I needed the freezer space.

Thank you, Tim

We got weevils in our pantry last year! YUK!
My daughter used to work for a pest control company and said you have to dump EVERYTHING and wipe everything down with a bleach solution! We then did the thrift store round to find glass and plastic containers for everything we keep in the pantry. We would just cut out the label and/or instructions and tape them to the containers so we knew what to do. No problems since. Nancy
