Lettuce seeds didn't germinate (heat pad)

I've been trying to get some fall lettuce seeds to germinate and have had very little success. I'm starting them indoors, under lights and on a heat pad.

I now realize that the soil temperature may be too warm for them to germinate. D'oh!

I'm wondering if I can just take them off of the heat pad and the seeds will do their thing and sprout, or have they been ruined? Anyone have any idea on this?

Thanks!

PS - interestingly, my escarole seeds sprouted like champs, but the "regular" lettuce did nothing.
