And here comes Fall

Dont know how everyone else feels about the change in seasons but I have to admit it kinda makes me sad. This is my second year at veggie gardening and I am hooked! Already thinking and dreaming about more expansion despite all the challenges this year including a serious case of poison ivy from clearing for more space and a two month battle with a groundhog. When I drive around town and see these great big lawns I am thinking what a waste grow some food people! And while I do have my fall crops in the ground I can definitly see that growth starts to slow down as the number of hours of sun diminishes.

So what do all of the other garden addicts do once it gets too cold thinking I better have a plan!

Sincerely,
LindaLu

Lot of work in the fall to prep the garden for next year.

Then there are all the catalogs to read, and pretty soon it's time to start seeds.

So what do you do in fall? Besides remove the stuff that grew and is finished. I always just add compost in spring and rototill in. Could use some advice!!!!

In the fall, one plants garlic, pick and eat a number of greens, pick and freeze celery and parsley, pick fennel and coriander seeds, pick and store root crops, clears dead plants, and dumps leaves on resting beds. For eating into the winter, it is time to make some hoop houses.

Fall is when I till in the compost, also the chopped leaves from the trees. A LOT of those.

I plan the next year's garden and shift the beds around.

But that's later. September, with cooler weather, is a good time for canning.

My garden goes into October and sometimes November, so I have to be pretty creative in starting my fall/winter stuff.
I start my chard and lettuce in the shade of the last of the green beans, cleared out the onions and cukes to plant broccoli.
I still have to find room for radish, more lettuce, greens, beets, arugula, cilantro, carrots..... Nancy

I think I grow more in the Fall/Winter than in the summer.

sweet peas, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, spinach, kholrabi, pak choi, wheat! brussel sprouts, gai lan, carrots, fava beans, leeks, rutabagas, mustard, onions, turnips, garlic

Like fotoman, I keep it going all year. Growing beets, turnips, radishes, carrots, kale, collards, Brussels sprouts, arugula, lettuce, spinach, Asian greens, leeks, and fava beans. I use row cover and plastic greenhouse covers, and even when I am not harvesting all winter the stuff that overwinters gets a really good head start in early spring.
So other than that there's always catalog-perusing, planning, and seed starting, but I admit I kinda enjoy the break, too--gardening is hard work!

I'm going to be using the fall to do what I didn't do in the summer when I was busy with the vegetable gardening: Clean the house. Paint the front handrail. Maybe refinance the mortgage. Clean the garage. :)

I love this forum! Thank you for the replies. I do have cool crops growing but they just aren't as much sun to watch I guess. In the summer it was all I could do to finish my coffee and off I went to the garden sometimes in my pjs to my kids dismay. I lost my tomatoes to blight the day after my original post so what I thought was just a little browning from cooler temps was the dreaded blight. So now I have big open spaces where things used to be. I ordered dome rye grass so that once everything is done I can plant that for turning into the soil next spring. Time to clean up I guess. All my stuff in the basement in the grow light area needs cleaning and I need to get some straw to cover the perennials so yes the garden work continues, guess I am just a fan of warm weather!!!! Happy gardening everyone!
