cantaloupe plant suddenly severely wilted

Yesterday my cantaloupe plant was suddenly severely wilted. It looked great just the day before. I watered it quite a bit at that time and put some cardboard under some of the melons. There are about 10 good-sized ones. This plant sprouted on its own from an area where I throw out fruits & vegetables so I don't have to put them in my trash. This area is a pile of material that was once ashes where I burn wood & leaves, so I am really surprised it has done so well. The 1st few melons were really good.

Any ideas what may have happened? I don't see any pests. The main vine looks ok. Weather hasn't changed. I'm supposing root damage. This is really hurtful to me, just wanted to share with someone else mainly. My wife wasn't very sympathetic.
