what is eating my chard

I am gardening in Nova Scotia. I had a lovely crop of chard until a few weeks ago. At first i thought it was slugs, but by the time I looked closer, i discovered it was these green caterpillars. They have completely decimated my plants. The critters come out and feed at night. In the day time they appear to hide down in the center of the plants, which is why it took me a while to figure them out. They do not look anything like the cabbage worms which I have seen on the kale plants growing right next to the chard. And none of these have moved to the kale. I sprayed what was left of the plants last week with Bt, and they seem to be finally growing new leaves in the center. Any ideas what i am dealing with?
