Cabbages are cool/cold weather veggies, so they may just be taking off if you're weather is getting cooler. Depending on the variety, they may get much larger. Check the package to see how big you should expect them to grow...

Also, they're heavy feeders, so a side dressing of some compost or a little bit of nitrogen (bloodmeal) wouldn't hurt them at all..

No, I can't post a picture --- tried on other forums. I'm really bad with computers. Each cabbage is growing in a little square of a cement block that has had no fertilizer (and until today, no water.) Unfortunately if they are heavy feeders, they might starve.

Are you sure it's cabbage and not weeds? I'm puzzled at why you would bother planting a vegetable garden and neglect it like that. If you want any degree of success with growing vegetables, you have to make sure it gets enough water, sun, fertilizer, and is free of weed competition.

If you can confirm that it is in fact cabbage, you can try eating a leaf to see whether it's worth keeping.

OOOh Donna -- someone needs a little hug this morning! Yep, I planted it and neglected it after eating the lettuce until it bolted. The cabbage is indeed red cabbage - I don't need to eat a leaf. There are cabbages forming in all of them even though they have been neglected. It is truly amazing how hardy and determined the little guys are.

So, yes, I will now care for them.

I wasn't being snarky, just genuinely puzzled at why anyone would go through the trouble to plant anything and not care for it. I am more encouraged by the little successes I have in my garden compared to the failures (although those can be educational in their own right).

I know life can get in the way, but it just seems like such a waste. My sister has the world's blackest thumb and she planted some vegetables this year because her young son requested a garden. Well, she didn't water it once, and nothing really became of the garden.
