Hi all,
I posted a question in the alliums forum, but I'm not sure if there is much activity there so I decided to repost it here since this is where I do most of my lurking ; ) I hope you all don't mind.
I was wondering if it is too early to plant garlic? I have read that mid-October is the time, but I received the garlic I ordered from Territorial and would like to get it in the ground this week. What do you think? I have never planted garlic before and really need some advice.
Thank you in advance.

Just keep them in a cool place for another few weeks and plant them. They are REALLY EASY!

tommyr, would you think keeping them in the frig would be okay until planting time?
RE: planting garlic

Not sure if the fridge is a good idea or not. Keep them in a dark, cool place for 2 more weeks then go for it!

The fridge will tend to dry them out. Cool and dark, and dry, like a closet is much better. Actually, even the kitchen counter will work at this stage, since they are not trying very hard to grow at this time of year. Planting in October, or even November is good for zone 5. The idea is for them to develop root strength before they get into a lot of top growth, and planting too early could stimulate top, growth if you have warm weather. Plant when the weather cools and looks like it will stay cool.

keeneorganics.com A garlic farm in zone 5. Great info available.

I always waited until after the first frost. you should get some growth in the indian summer days after frost, up till the hard freeze hits, just mulch them up good, and they will overwinter just fine, and pop up in early spring for a late spring/early summer harvest. during the growing season, provide lots of compost, as they will be hungry and will grow fast.

Fridges will make them germinate. They germinate with cool weather. Last December my Garlic started to germinate. I planted mid-October last year, and harvested in August. I have kept them in the garage since. I will plant them in 3-4 weeks to harvest in July-August next year.

After several years of growing garlic, it's still one of my favorite things to grow. It has a nice combination of being a little unusual for most gardeners and it's really easy. On that note, don't think too hard about it. Like others have said, wait at least a few more weeks before you plant it. Here in southern NH, which is also zone 5, I leave ours in the basement until I plant in early November, which is later than most. One year I needed a shovel to break through the frozen ground to plant, but it still grew just fine the next year. I always mulch ours with several inches of leaves for the winter.

Thank you all very much. I am going to pencil the garlic in on my calander in 2-3 weeks. In the meantime I will store it in my broom closet(dry, dark and cool) and try to stop walking around the garden reassigning its location every day after work. (I have an itch that won't be scratched until it is safely underground : /) And I will spend some time checking out the site with the zone 5 garlic.

FWIW, Mike McGrath from You Bet Your Garden (public radio show) did a show recently that recommended planting garlic right after Labor Day. He's in zone 6 like me, and I plan to put mine in next weekend. I planted in mid-November last year and my bulbs were pretty small when I harvested in July.

Just recently received 2 lbs of music garlic from a farm in Vermont. I'm eager to plant also as I have erected a 4 x 5 foot raised bed specifically for garlic. I plan on fine screening the dirt, which has lots of compost, along with top soil and mushroom manure. I've planted garlic before from China, some good some lousy outcomes, however it's sure nice during the winter knowing something's growing. |

Why not buy from a local Farmers Market like you would if you were eating them? That's what I did. I planted the Garlic they sell for eating. It was organic hard neck Garlic.

I already planted mine last week, since I heard the NPR show on garlic. I'm in zone 5a in WI. It looks like it'll be warm a couple more days and then stay cold after next week, so I'm not worried about them.

My local farmers market is a rip off run by amish farmers. I went to pick some peaches, the man in the hat and blue shirt said to me "let me help you"...I got home and the few on top were nice, however the rest under them were ROTTEN, and I do mean rotten, we had the same happen with string beans...aint gonna happen again. Only fresh garlic available here is from China, and I do not want to use it either. So garlic farms in the U.S get my business even though it cost's more |

wow japaus, we have not had anything like that here. Our Amish neighbors have always been more than fair and have given us extra produce when the crops were not the best.

I don't know why, but I am so excited and nervous about planting this garlic. I've never grown it before, i've never known anyone who grew it before, so I guess it's the novelty of it. I am anxious to try something besides grocery store garlic.I am going to go ahead and get it done this next weekend.

RE: planting garlic

yes surely you will be hooked, I love the idea of a plant starting to grow in winter, makes the wait till spring much more comforting. I was picking mine this year, did not do well, however I really hollered when I ate a couple cloves while harvesting.\ |

Can anyone tell me how deep should I plant the garlic cloves? This is my first time trying to grow garlic. From previous messages, it is due to go in the ground this week.
RE: planting garlic

I will be planting the following week. However, I put the cloves in at ground level, and then push down a tiny bit further.
RE: planting garlic

Put them down about 2 inches.

I'm finding garlic already growing in my garden. Apparently, I missed some while digging this summer and they've decided to grow. Yesterday, I separated them and replanted in a new area. Also put some new cloves in the ground. I've planted anywhere from early September to mid October and have good results. Guess I would have no idea whether planting later is better.
