Red cabbage not very red!

I have grown summer red cabbage Kalibos - got a monster! Cut it today for pickling - but as I stripped off the outer leaves the red colour got successively less with each layer. When I finally cut into the head what I had was a pale GREEN cabbage with pink veins! Grew the same variety last year and it was red as you like right through.

Not a problem - it will taste just as good, but I'm curious as to why this should be and wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience with "red" cabbage?
