What Varieties of Asparagus The Big Box Stores Carry?

I need to order some asparagus roots for the spring. Should I do mail order? Or should I wait next spring to see what HD and Lowes, or even my local co-op carry? I just need to order some regular Jersey (Knight?) type of plants. Shipping cost for mail order is not cheap....

Most of them at least in this area carry Bonnie plants which means Mary Washington.

I saw they had the pants for sale in spring, but I did not pay attention to what they were selling.

I bought Bonnie Asparagus, it did not list a variety. They are doing well.

Buy the sterile Jersey series. The shipping costs are not at all prohibitive when you figure in the longevity of asparagus and the relief of not having to weed all those seedlings out of the beds every year.

The asparagus I originally bought were unnamed seedlings that I got from a local grower. They set seeds every year and I've never found any new seedlings popping up. Rodney

Around here several stores carry at least one of the sterile asparagus varieties as bare roots sold in plastic perforated bags holding several roots. They are in the same area of the store as onion sets, lily and dahlia bulbs, and gladiola "bulbs" and arrive quite early in the spring. I know I've seen them at Menards and also at two different local nurseries. Perhaps you could check with a long time employee at a store or two in your area and see if they know what has been carried in the past. Are the Bonnie asparagus plants growing in pots? I've seen other nursery pots with plants and that is a $$$$ way to buy asparagus since you want lots of plants, not just a pot or two. Bare root planted in early to mid spring is the way to go even if you have to order from somewhere. The linked site may be a good one to check in the spring. As I recall it had good prices....also good for potatoes....but since they aren't selling anymore of these for 2014 the prices don't show up on the page now.

At Wal-Mart I have seen Purple Passion, the Washington ones and Jersey varieties. I bought some of the Purple and Jersey to fill in gaps in my beds and they did fine. However, the ones I received mail order were definitely bigger/more developed.

They did have Jersey Asparagus crowns/roots that I bought, and they didn't grow anything. I bought the Bonnie asparagus in a plastic 6 pack planter. Not very developed, and I may or may not get Asparagus in the Spring... but they definitely grew nicely for the first year from what I have read. Buying the stuff when they have them at the big box store is so much cheaper than online.... I save the online buying for the hard to find stuff that produces well enough to justify the price.
