If you had good luck with your compost, you could simply fill in more if the beds are getting low. Most of my friends bring in "mallard mulch", or "Mango Mulch" (expensive), but they're planting in the ground.

I created my raised beds (Sonoma County) last summer using a "veggie mix" from the local quarry. This year, I'm tossing in some steer manure but that's about it. The soil is still pretty good and I haven't lost much volume. In the meantime, I'm working on a compost pile that I hope will be ready for next spring.

As for how long it takes to prepare the soil, I've pulled plants, turned over the soil and planted new ones all within the same hour. I don't think the soil needs to rest in your situation. If possible, I'd try to move things around, though, such as planting broccoli where you had your zuchs instead of the same place you had your broccoli.

As for when, I'm putting in peas right now and will be putting in more broccoli as soon as the starts come out in the nurseries, which is right around now. I don't think it's too soon to start the fall planting.

Hi Angela, I'm also in the SF East Bay. Just like you, I also pulled some summer squash, dry onion, and the 1st round of pole beans. I sowed snow peas, radish, and cilantro in their place. When? Last week. What to add? For these, I usually do not amend the soil.

The seeds for cool weather greens, I sowed in seedling pots. When? last week. What to add? When they're ready to go in, I plan on just adding some aged manure and compost.
