| Photo shows some of my C. moschata squash harvest. This is a variety that a friend of mine has been developing for commercial release and he gave me some seeds to do a trial. It is similar to the heirloom Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck, whose fruits can be in the 10 pound plus range. Mine weigh in at around 3 to 3 1/2 pounds. I do not know the exact provenance but the variety has been selected for smaller fruit size, shorter vines, shorter growing season, and long, stable storage life (easily stores 8 months or longer). The Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck is a fairly long-season variety and as such is hit or miss up here in Minnesota. He wanted to develop a similar variety that would do well in our short growing season, and it appears that he has succeeded. The variety has excellent SVB resistance. This fact was proven out to me this year as I had a bad SVB problem that affected my C. pepo, C. maxima, and my cucumber vines. All were within ten feet of my C. moschata yet the C. moschata was completely unaffected. I have always preferred the flavor and smooth texture of the tan colored C. moschata squash varieties. Waltham Butternut has always been my favorite, but this one might bump Waltham out of that position. It is a fun little squash to grow. Now I am looking for a baby Butternut. I wonder if I can talk him into working on that one. :-) -Tom (Click image to see larger.) |

| These look like small versions of "neck" pumpkins, which have an even smaller bulb at the bottom. They are butternuts (C. moschata) which gives them natural resistance to squash vine borers. Most neck pumpkins like Dickinson Field Neck are very large, though. A straight neck is a desirable characteristic, too, for easier processing. I have had moschatas like this keep for over a year in the basement. |
