What types of tomatoes do best in South Central Texas (San Antonio)? I am going to order heirloom seeds for my spring garden. Thanks.

I grew Rutgers this past year and they were delicious. They are determinates, but still produced into July. Next year, I will start a second crop a month later than the first.

Check out the Growing Tomatoes forum here too (linked at the top of this forum front page) as there are several Texas growers that post there regularly. There are also many discussions there on 'favorite' tomatoes. But in all honesty there's no variety that you can't grow. It's just a matter of which type (determinate or indeterminate), size, and color you prefer. Dave

With a bit of cover...and your fingers crossed...some of the smaller cherry/grape tomatoes can produce during the hell heat of mid-summer. It may or may not be worth the trouble depending on how badly you want some small fruited tomatoes. Fall tomatoes are generally a lot more productive than the spring-into-summer crops in the hotter areas, but both can be done as long as full-on summer doesn't creep up on you in early May.

The weather get's pretty hot and humid here early. Last season the best varieties for me were Atkinson, Rutgers, Porter(developed in Texas), and Arkansas Traveler. All have good flavor and are great for canning.

My best tomtoes last summer (hottest and driest on record) were Black Krim, Black Cherry, Cherokee Yellow, Roma Rapheal and Large Red Cherry. Others that have done well in more normal years were Ananas Noir and Big Beef (Hybrid).

Early Girl and Homestead were real good choices for me.
