asparagus roots

Bought 50 purple asparagus roots from one of the major mail-order places this summer. Hardly any looked good and only about 15 ever ended up surfacing. They were good about refunding, but there we were with a whole prepared bed and no asparagus. The local co-op is doing their end-of-season discounting, and we got 20 Jersey male roots for $8. They all came right up. I would like to get 40 more and plant a 2nd bed in the spring. What is the best way to winter over these roots to keep them alive until then?

I think you should put them in a nursery bed outside for the winter, then dig them when it's time to transplant them into their permanent bed. If you keep them in the fridge that long, the roots will likely dry out or get moldy.

Asparagus we have in our garden are cold hardy in winter season of Maryland. They are in the garden for more than 5 years.Roots mature,in my experience , in about three years.
