Okra question

This year I am growing Eagle Pass okra. Late in the season, I picked out the three best plants and left one pod on each. I was expecting that these plants would stop producing before the others. Surprise; all the other plants have quit and only the three with the maturing pods are still producing. Any ideas/comments?
By the way, I highly recommend Eagle Pass. This variety has a wide window where the pods can be picked. The pods can get really big and still be tender. We have been grilling and roasting them and they are delish. They do have spines though.
