Spinach plants dying off

Christian

I have a small patch of spinach plants that I started from seed over a month ago. Some of the plants are starting to grow pretty well, but I've had something strange happening lately. It seems that every few days I lose a plant or two. I first noticed some affected plants were wilting, and then realized its because it seems the roots had been completely eaten off... I tried handling a wilted plant and realized it no longer had roots, like it had been cut off.
I am trying to figure out what the problem is. My suspicion is grubs, specifically the junebug grubs. I know in my garden area, every time I dig into the soil, I see a lot of them around. Does that sound likely? I know they eat roots, so it seems reasonable they might be the culprits. Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on how to save my remaining plants?
