Rain it is.

The fleshy cell walls got big inside because of all the moisture and cracked the skin.

I've heard stories that some strains are more resistant than others. Makes sense I suppose. Commercial growers would not want to use a strain where one rain could ruin the crop.

Same things happened to me. I just came in from picking - had to toss 2 berry baskets full.

the tomatoes were getting bigger than the ones this summer, they were at least getting bigger than the golf ball sized ones. sorry queen, I had to toss mine too :(

When I saw a couple of mine starting to do that, I picked em let em ripen inside before it got worse. I don't know if it made a difference but they were edible was ripened.
Side note, they were just starting to change color from green when I did it.
Tomatoes are a pain. But good.

Several years ago we had two inches of rain in less than 24 hours. The next day 200-300 cherry tomaatoes had split open, just on one plant.

These day I keep a few buckets of compost to keep on hand in case of expected heavy rain. I pour a few inches of the sifted compost around the tomatoes to reduce the splitting. Not sure how much good it does; but makes me feel like I'm doing something.

The heavy rains are becoming more frequent.

Hi ancfan... it's caused by too great a variation in watering or water available. I've found tomatoes like to be kept on the dry side.

You'll find several discussions on "cracking" and how to prevent it as well as info on varieties that are more prone or more resistant to the problem over on the Growing Tomatoes forum here (linked at the top of this forum page). I linked a couple of them below.

Preventing cracking is one reason why many of us prefer to pick at the blush or break stage and ripen inside.
