Crazy, yes, I know. I bought 8 Victoria seedlings today. I planted four of them and put a "wall of water" around each. i am in north central Ohio, zone 5. Is it possible they can get enough of a start to survive the winter? How many weeks would I need to leave the protection around them? Can I then just remove the wall of water so they will go dormant, or wait until there is some unseasonably warm weather? I would love to see these seedlings make it. I have four more I will try to keep alive in the house until spring. I am excited to try the Victoria strain and hope it's as good as the nameless heirloom variety I already have. MY established clump came from a woman who said it's been passed down from her family farm in West Virginia for over 100 years. It's great rhubarb. Thanks! Linda

Please note, I've never gardened with rhubarb in zone 5, but I feel it's very hardy and as long as you don't allow frost heaving to heave it out of the ground...and you don't let it get too dry (or consequently also too wet), I think it should be fine.

I planted rhubarb seeds in June or July last year and left the seedlings in the ground over winter. Most of them made it through the winter. If your seedlings are tiny, they might not make it.

Thanks. I will see what happens and take a guess about how long to leave the "wall of water" protection around the plants.
