Best time to order seeds

| What's the best time to order vegetable seeds for next year? I have my order ready, but wonder if I'm better waiting a few months to get it as fresh as possible. On the other hand, it also makes sense to order it now so it doesn't travel through very cold weather. |

| Now. The seeds are already packaged for next year so are as "fresh" as you are going to get. Most will be from 2007 and 2008 crops anyway. ;) Buying now avoids the late winter/early spring order rush that overwhelms the vendors, usually delays orders, and ends up with "out of stock" or wrong seed results. Just be sure you store them properly - cool and dry - once you get them. Dave |

| I like to order mine as early as I can get them, but the new Fedco online catalog won't be ready until December according to their website so that's slowing me down, darn it all! |

| Yeah, you can defiantly order now for next years garden. All seeds should be fresh and ready for the 2010 season. |

| I chatted with Katie from Peaceful Valley Seeds and they have fresh 2010 seeds coming in. They send out there catalog in December. 2009 seeds they sell in the catalog 2010 and online at a discount and they market them as 2009 seeds. Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply (888)784-1722 Happy Growing

| I agree that the sooner you order the better. I recall reading a discussion here this last spring about all the delayed and undelivered seed orders from people who waited until after the first of the year to order. |

| Has anyone gotten the new Seed Saver's Exchange catalog? I signed up to get one about a month ago and am wondering if it too is coming out in December. Just curious. Thanks,

| I usually wait until January. That way, I'm sure I'm getting the newer seed, and still beat the rush of those who weren't planning, and suddenly get struck with spring fever. I've never experienced any delays ordering in January or February. |

| I always send my order after the Xmas & New Years holidays. By then, I have usually received my catalogs, and made decisions on any new seeds to try, or what I can afford. Plus, I have found it a pleasant thing to do during the coldest part of the year! |

| I use to wait until February to order seeds. Who wants to store seeds or run the risk of them getting lost in the shuffle around the holidays? However, you run the risk of things being sold out & delays in shipping if you wait. |

| I learned quickly to wait until I got the catalogs I was expecting. What I learned was if I order from Stokes, which came yesterday, that soon Johnny's will send me a catalog and I will order more and then ... . You get the idea. If I wait a while I can usually order from one place and save on shipping. |

| Mine came in the mail today. I had a small order because I went to square foot gardening and plant only a few seeds at a time, so I have quite a few saved for the coming year. I know I will miss going through the catalogs.At least I still can dream. That's forty Left over packs and eight new. Don't feel sorry for me. Ha. Curt :-) |

| In a somewhat related question, does everyone order via catalog as opposed to online? Personally, I order all of my seeds online, and thus only have to wait until they take down their "SOLD OUT FOR 2009" text. |

| haven't gotten my SSE yet and their website will not be ready until tomorrow! haven't gotten bakers creek yet either....that is the one I want the MOST! |

In a somewhat related question, does everyone order via catalog as opposed to online? I order only online. I just toss the printed catalogs I didn't ask for. Some really like paging through the catalogs and reading about everything though. Now that I think about it, I toss the catalogs I get around this time, but actually tend to peruse the catalogs I get in the dead of winter. Don't order from them though as they all have online ordering which is easier for me to do. |
