 o
asparagus sources?

I'd like to get some asparagus plants or crowns to set out this winter. The bed is already prepared. My problem is finding a nursery to send them to me now, as opposed to next March.

One place (in Tennessee) says that fall-planting is a bad idea. I placed an order from Burgess last month and they returned my check, said their shipping season was over.

Any suggestions?

Pretty much impossible this time of year as you have discovered. And I would agree that fall planting has a much lower survival rate.

At this time of year the suppliers are still waiting for the crowns to go dormant so they can be dug in late winter for early spring shipment.

You could start from seed in a bit over a month or so. I started some last year, and they are in the ground now. I only did about 10 though, so this year I'll start 30-50 of them.

You are not likely to find a grower of asparagus crowns willing to disturb their beds at this time of year.

Just a thought...if it grows wild close to where you live you could go out into the country and dig some up. Pretty easy to spot this time of year!

I did find a couple of places that ship in winter- Ison's of Brooks, GA and Womack's of DeLeon, TX.

I suspect that asparagus nurseries in the South (if I can find them) would be more accomodating to my needs.

Another source I found today, a nursery located in Grass Valley, California.

I have worked with this site & found they are honest & do what they say they will do, as will the link below.
www.kvbwholesale.com has them in the Spring catalog.
They have a retail catalog too.
Spring of 2012 the 25/$17.50, 100/$56.00, 250/$117.00 for first year plants of Jersey Knights or Purple Passion.

I've got a better one for you......De Bruyn Seed. You can't beat their prices on asparagus or potatoes. I've ordered asparagus crowns from them a few times and the quality has always been good. (Same with the potatoes)

100 Jersey Knights for $26.95
100 Purple Passion for $32.50
(Johnny's has 25 crowns for $35!!)
