Hawk in my garden!

| I am either doing something wrong or something right! LOL
I'm guessing it's because I started putting on my winter layer of grass and leaves on the garden three weeks ago, piled deep. About 1400 SF covered so far. More to come.
A beautiful hawk has been sitting on one of my arbor posts every day for the last week. I guess rats are in the piles?
I haven't saw him catch anything yet and he doesn't seem to be afraid of me when I am nearby, as close as 20'! Except when I try to take a picture! :) |

How many inches do you cover your veggie garden for the winter?

As long as the hawk is not eating your plants, good friend to have around - many small burrowing animals love winter mulch; hawks like burrowing animals. It's a win, I'd say.

I have hawks, eagles or falcons (not sure the difference) in my neighborhood too. They are so beautiful. They are also one reason I don't have chickens.

A lot of hawks, falcons and eagles here, too. We're next to a seed storage building where there's always seed dumped on the ground, so there's a lot of pigeons and doves that end up as prey. Last winter there was a large hawk or maybe an eagle(dark head)just sitting in the front yard in the snow. I thought it was hurt for a moment, then realized it had a pigeon pinned down. You could see a trench in the snow behind it where it had swooped in for the kill.

I had a little more time to watch him/her today. It suddenly took off, very fast and pinned down a rat, I think, maybe some other rodent type animal. It flew away with it, for about 15 minutes and came back! It is watching over the garden again now! I noticed another one about 1/2 mile from home yesterday sitting on a power line near a field. Such a beautiful majestic bird!

All that mulch must have attracted a lot of rodents. Hopefully it will eat them all, because they can be a real problem.

Very certain and general thought, that either way, being present in your garden would solve most everything. Because you are there. Always mulch. Or not. Up to you. Take care, Travis

I guess it ran out of rodents, I haven't saw it for the last two days. I have two cats that will take care of any leftovers. They are hunters!
