I thought I posted this before but couldn't find anything. Does anyone grow this radish? I found seeds for the green ones and wanted to try them. What's your experience with them? Marg

I grew "Rat Tail" some years back, and personally, I didn't like them. The pods became tough too quickly. Even the young pods of "White Icicle" were more palatable. IMO, the best radish for pods is "Madras Podding", which I also grew. It was much more succulent, had fatter pods, and was very slow to develop fiber. According to the Cornell garden site, it has several aliases, including "Munchener Bier" or "Munchen Bier".

I grew rat tail radishes a few years ago and they were reasonably tasty and very productive. I did eat the pods when they were young and smaller than the size to which they were reported to grow. I thought it was a fun and novel plant and would recommend it. If I remember correctly mine grew with a bit of variation of color. I don't remember any difference in taste or productivity related to the coloration.

I grew Madras. They get rather large (some of mine were up to 3 feet high) and the good bugs love the flowers, which are a rather pretty pink but gangly. They are great in stir fries or a nice snack while gardening. The taste is of radish concentrated, spicy, and fresh, almost like a radish snap pea. Even on the Madras the older ones did get bitter if left on the plant too long. Picked, they seem to last for 10 days or so in the fridge. My husband and I grew a few at a time in staggered plantings and it was plenty. Next year I think I will work them into my landscape and stake them up. More of a novelty than a staple, I will continue to grow larger quantities of "regular" radishes, but I bet they would be a hit at market, and I think I will have a few of these in my garden forever-- they really are a keeper.
