| I have a couple plants and herbs growing in my apartment, including thyme, chives, and scallions. I have them in two small planters, but plan to move them to a bigger pot of soil soon. I wanted to experiment with some shallots I had because I LOVE shallots! I tried it the way I replant my delicious scallions---cut it about 3/4 inch from the bottom of the root end. I planted it and though it seems to be killing my thyme plant (maybe too acidic?, it does seem to be sprouting from the center of the bulbs. I checked a couple of sites to see if what I did will yield any results, but it all seems to indicate planting the bulbs whole is the way to go. Should I keep going? or should I cut my losses and save my thyme?
I don't have alot of experience with plants and gardening beyond planting store bought flowers, but I really love cooking and love that I don't have to keep buying scallions and herbs in bulk that go bad because I can't use it all before it dies--- they grow and I can cut them or replant them again and again so they stay fresh and FREE!!! (great for a college girl like me) In the picture, my thyme is on the top and the sprouting shallot on the bottom! |

| I've always planted my allium bulbs, whether they be onions, shallots, or garlic, whole--never heard about cutting them. I'd save the thyme, if I could. You do understand that, while you can harvest most herbs as they are growing, it will take several months for the shallot bulbs to mature, don't you? |

| When planted with bulb cut off, it will go to seeding quickly and will not produce the tender shoots as much. |

| @Wolverine--I understand. I just wanted to see what would happen! after I planted it, I checked a couple of websites and I know that the shallots won't mature anywhere near (like WAAAAAY more time necessary) as fast as my scallions. I was not going to harvest anything until it is ready.Thanks for the feedback. |
