Cucumber and Pepper Questions

Posted by herbgardener (My Page) on

Thinking of growing mini peppers next year:
Sweet Cherry
Mini Chocolate Bell
Mini Red Bell
Doe Hill
Has anyone grown any of these and your comments would be appreciated. Are they prolific - read that Doe Hill is.

Thinking of also growing cucumbers:
Boothy' Blonde
Lemon
Chrystal Apple
Richmond Green Apple
Tondo Liscio
Carosello Mezzo Lungo

Anyone grown any of the above. Which are prolific and do they have alot of seeds. Which types not listed do you really like.

Also what about Agretti?

Thanks so much your comments are really appreciated

The mini bells are neat, but generally are too small to do much with unless you want to make mini-stuffed peppers or you want to use a small amount in your cooking. They tend to be prone to cracking, but it could be a cultivar thing and they set a ton of fruit anyway.

Sweet cherry isn't bad, but it's nothing special. The skins can get a bit too thick for some people's tastes.

Doe Hill is a very pretty pepper. It's a pimento-type with a pretty nice sweetness to it. Some people complain about skin thickness on those, too.

BTW...In the pepper forum there's a seed-for-SASE 2.5"-3.5" sweet pepper I'm offering if you're interested.

Here is a link that might be useful: seed offer: Crunch Sweet Orange sweet pepper

I grew the sweet cherry. Also grew a red hot cherry. We like the sweet red cherry in salads. I also grew a yellow mini bell. I know that's not on your list but they actually turned out orange, were sweet and kind of citrusy. Fun to stuff with cream cheese or to pickle.

Yeah, mini bells are fun if you love to do snack/finger food or stuffed peppers as a side-dish type thing. I've only tried/seen two types grown and both had issues with cracking or bug invasions.

That said, they produced so much fruit it was just a minor annoyance rather than something that ruined it all.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of growing these to sell to my caterer and chef customer. The caterer to stuff and use as appies and chef to possibly use for an muse bouche. If they were to be stuffed as above would the skin still to tough?
Any more info on the cucumbers would be great.
Thanks again

RE: Cucumber and Pepper Questions

I grew lemon cucumbers last year and loved them. By the time they were big enough to consider eating they were ready to eat so I didn't have to sit around watching and wondering if they were ready like I did with the large varieties. The skin is pretty thin so I didn't bother peeling them. They were fairly productive, but something hit that section of garden mid summer and wiped out cucumber and squash plants so I don't know how long their season lasts.

Haven't tried any of the cukes you list, but if you are looking for a prolific variety, I can assure you that the Mideast-Prolific is indeed prolific. In this unfavourable cucumber year (wet, and more wet), 5 vines left to sprawl produced over 125 lbs of cucumbers. As a reference, 4-5 medium sized cukes weigh around 3.5 lbs.

Their skin is not as smooth as advertised and their seeds are not the most tender, but their taste is very good to excellent and the flesh is nice and crisp.

M_lorne- are the ME Prolifs conducive to growing vertically? I'm going to put my cukes on a mesh fence this year; will these succeed in that position, do you know?
