Should I pick winter squash now?

Here we are in November and the rainy season and I have butternut and buttercup vines that are still growing. With our climate I'm not sure when the vines will die. Is it time to harvest these squash?

The last picture - maybe as the stem looks very dry. The other - not at all. Harvest time normally has dry, almost dead vines, the individual fruit stems are quite dry and hard, and the skin on the squash is very hard. So hard that it can't be scored with your thumbnail.

Early picking affects flavor and shortens storage life but ultimately picking time is your choice.

Thanks Dave.

I thought the stem was dry too so I cut one of the buttercups but the stem wasn't dry at all inside. I'm not sure why some of the buttercup stems look like that. If it snowed here then the vines would probably be dead by now and the squash harvested, but with our weather I don't know when the vines will give up. I guess I'll just keep an eye on them to make sure they don't start rotting.

I'm waiting for my Butternut vines to die also. Everything else in the "summer annex" section of the garden is long gone, but the stupid vine will not quit! Maybe I will stop watering it so I can bring in the squash and clean up the area finally.
