I have this horrible (yet pretty) yellow oxalis spreading throughout my garden! Akk! With some of the beds I guess I could do the weed and feed that is made for the nasty stuff(really don't want to)while the beds are resting, but I'm already getting a few gus! Wouldn't want to kill those guys!I know they don't like to compete with other plants/weeds. If I put a thick layer of newspaper, will the gus poke through it OK? Will it even faze the oxalis in the spring? I don't have the $ to replace all the soil in my beds or the back to keep digging it out as I've read in other posts. Any suggestions? Nancy

Weed and feed would most likely kill your veggies, I wouldn't recommend herbicides of any kind anywhere near your garden. If you just want a cheap way to kill everything that will leave the stuff you want intact, try buying those 30+ gallon black leaf bags. Take a pair of scissors and cut down either side so you get a long wide strip of heavy black plastic. Spread that out over your garden, and cut holes in it where the stuff you want to keep are. Put it down over the soil and leave it there (weigh it down with some stones, old broom handles, whatever). The lack of light and water will kill pretty much everything under it, while the holes you cut out for your veggies will leave them intact. If your veggies are already too big to poke through a hole, you can cut in from the side of the plastic to let you lay it around the veggies, then duct tape it back together.

Always keep 3 inches or more of wood chips on your asparagus patch. In this case, some overwintering oxalis will return, but the seed bank will not sprout next year.

If you must use a weed killer of some sort, which isn't recommended, then there are specific products that are approved for using with asparagus beds. However the timing of their application is critical and their effectiveness with broad leaf weeds is limited. A hoe works best for removing the weeds and then mulch the bed heavily. Dave

After many years of worrying and trying everything imaginable to control weeds in asparagus, I've concluded that weeds are more a bother to me than to the asparagus. I now just mow regularly between the rows, and that's it. Occasionally, I'll prune out some noxious perennial weeds within the row before they go to seed, but that's it.

Edy- The asparagus is planted willey nilley, not in rows. It's hard to tell when it will sprout. I'll try this on dormant beds, though Glib- Thanks! Will do! I have a load sitting waiting for a place to be! Dig- No weed killer! I've already had a few gus to enjoy in our TG salad, so I don't have ANY idea when they will be sprouting! I'll pull and hoe, then do the wood chips as Glib said. Thanks all! Nancy
