Covering Veggies with netting??

I'm new to winter gardening and found out the hard way that brussel sprouts and cabbage are attacked by caterpillars that turned the leaves into swiss cheese overnight! I've been picking these chompers off 2x a day and am finding less and less now. My question is: is it too late to put a netting cover over the row or do these egg-laying butterflies only come in once a year? I'm wondering if I spray with a BT product, can I cover them now and be done with the problem? I'm guessing I should have put up the netting when I 1st planted these veggies? Is this something you only do in the winter garden?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If you are still seeing lots of white butterflies around, it might be worthwhile to cover. Otherwise, BT or spinosad will clean the plants like magic. This late in the year, a one-time treatment will do it. Watch for aphids next. They don't mind the cold and show up up in patches. Insecticidal soap for them.
