Wood Chips & Soil Improver

Hi, New to the Forum so 'Hi' to everyone!

I have a question: I am intrigued by the Back to Eden way of gardening and have looked extensively on the net for further information (of which there is a lot)! This is the planting in wood chips but I am using it as a soil improver as I am on hard, hard clay!!

My question is this: I have placed 4" of fresh wood chips in borders (just on top of the soil - not mixed in). The top of the wood chips get wet when it rains but immediately underneath the wood chips remain dry and lighter colored and even if I put a hose on them. The water runs straight through them!

Just out of interest, I have also put 4-6" of wood chips in my chicken run and ALL of the wood chips are wet! I realize they they get moved around but even so!!

Obviously the wood chips in my borders need moisture in order to break down - but I cannot see that they are getting sufficiently wet. It has now been 3 weeks since I put them down and it has rained a few times during that period.

Am I being impatient? Will they all get wet in time?
