help with soil prep for sweet potatoes

I am now preparing one 50 ft row for Beauregards this June. I have Ga red clay which I will amend with compost. I usually plant into raised hills which are about 10 to 12 inches above grade. My question is, How deep below the level of the raised hump do you recommend I amend the clay to give the tubers the needed room? I have harvested some really strange looking fruits in years past which I feel might not have happened if the soil depth had been optimal. Your thoughts will be appreciated.
