Plant Asparagus in Early Winter

The weather forecast still sees a mild winter so far. The ground won't be frozen for some time. Can I plant asparagus roots in ground now? I can still cover the crowns with 3" soil and mulch them heavily.

My only concern is that, the crowns sit in the trench. And snow or rain will go to the trench and the trench will be frozen over winter. I know asparagus is very winter hardy. But would this be too much for the crowns?

Early planting may has some advantage in terms of time. Or I can buy them in early spring. There may not be any big difference.

Sounds like you don't have the crowns right now. If so then I'd actually be surprised if anyone would ship crowns, especially to zone 6, this late in the year (but I could be wrong). Meaning that a spring planting will most likely be inevitable.

There are still quite a few sources to ship in early winter. The ground won't be frozen for the next 2-3 weeks. I just do not know if the gains out-weight the potential risk, if any. Or both would be minimal....

Considering you won't be able to harvest any until at least Spring 2016 either way, I'd suggest waiting until Spring. I planted mine in the Spring in NY and they did great.
