Skinny yam harvest

Hi everyone,
If anyone can share some wisdom about this, I would be very grateful!

I have just dug up my four garnet yams plants. Two of them were in two squares (square foot gardening) each and two were in large containers. I used Mel's mix in the squares and cheap potting compost in the containers (because I had run out of home made compost). The position with regard to sun was exactly the same.

The results were not impressive, but interesting. The ones in the squares produced only slightly thickened red stringy roots, but the ones in the containers did produce a couple of ok sized potatoes and a few long skinny ones. It was just the opposite of what I was expecting.

I read on the net that too much nitrogen can lead to long skinny sweet potatoes. Is Mel's mix very high nitrogen?

I am wondering what to do next year. I have very limited space. Should I just plant in the same place but not amend the mix?

Thanks,
