Suggestions for an old craftsman house (good image)

We are planning on adding brick to the exterior wall. There is about 5ft of space for landscaping on the exterior in front of the wall. We are also considering removing this pomagrante tree and adding ornamental grasses to the front edge of the house. We are thinking about adding some Italian Pines to the left corner of the house. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

RE: Suggestions for an old craftsman house (good image)

First you need to decide on "what flavor you would like." Do you want a cottage garden, do you want a woodland, tropical, flower, food production, do you want to be hip and have a xeroscape. For me personally, I would never get rid of ANY plant, I might find a new place for it, but never destroy it, so moving the Pomagranate would be an option. Pines are lovely and lend themselves to many types of landscapes. I think the point here is- you need to decide what you like. The house is lovely, and I am particularly fond of old houses, I live in an English Cottage. Once you have decided what you like, "what kind of landscape feels good to you," then it is simply a matter of finding plant material that looks like it belongs in that kind of landscape. Once you find a plant you like and it looks good in that kind of landscape, then you need to check its requirements and determine if it will live in YOUR location. I hope I have not gotten too rudimentary on you,
