Good morning! I'm having some difficulty in trying to figure out what materials I would need and how best to achieve the look I want. The area sits on clay, so it's constantly muddy, weed ridden, and slick.

My side yard doesn't get a lot of sun and grass won't stay, so I'd like to build a center pathway of pavers and then both sides with some kind of bed of lava rock. I was thinking of encasing the lava rocks with some landscaping lumber, but not sure how to do that against the fence.

The area is on a grade into the fence. Any suggestions on what materials to use to create a lava rock border both against the foundation and fence line?
