Best pathway material...and weed barrier needed?

We just cleared a huge plot of yard using a sod cutter. We took the sod and created a nice array of berms to be filled with xeriscape/low water perrenials. I'd like to take the cleared non-bermed areas and cover with a pathway material. On top of that, I have some flagstone. Not enough to cover the whole area, but enough to make some paths. The whole look will be sort of rustic, southwestern, not too structured -- but definitely a delinieation between flat pathway and berms.

Any tips on choosing the size of breeze or crusher fines? I've read 3/8" minus, is the standard...yes/no?

How do I pick a color? There is a charcoal, red "sunset", "White" which is really a light sand color, and then a mix which just looks like a light grey. There is a substantial amount of pathway and I'm worried about it looking like a sea of **insert gavel color**.

Do I have to use some kind of weed barrier? I really hate the stuff and feel like it just makes weeds tougher to pull -- but doesn't eliminate them. But am I a fool to skip it?

Thanks for you help!
