perovskias need a friend or two

What can I place in front of these guys as companion plants. There are very tiny achillea 'moonshine'(s) growing there, but they're little. I still think I need a couple of shrubs or grasses or something to support the perovskias. It looks so barren.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am in zine 5, so not very familiar with the options of your zone. From the looks of the perovskia in your picture I would suggest a good sized grouping of echinacea in whatever color works with the erst of your garden. I just bought some Fatal Attraction echinaceas and love the darker pink/burgundy color. It would also work well with the silvery foliage of the achillea and its lemon yellow flowers. Have you considered some daylilies in fruit-shades like melon or raspberry pink? Again, I don't know what grows well in your zone and your location, but I think you can use the the large clump of bluish flowers and play with either contrasting colors or harmonious complementary colors. Good luck!

How about Mexican feathergrass (Nassella tenuissima) which is also drought tolerant. And a third plant that could change from season to season . . . maybe California poppy in spring, Gaillardia or Echinacea (as marcindy suggested) in summer, ?? the rest of the year.

Or for a more subtle combination where the emphasis would be on form: a large lavender (heterophyla maybe) and some smaller agaves.

Those are gorgeous plants, btw. How old are they . . .and how long did it take them to get to full size? I have several that are a couple of years old and they just aren't growing like I thought they would.

A silvery artemesia would be pretty against that dark green and lavendar. Wormwood would get large enough to cover some of the lower parts of your perovskias.
