Help please!!!

I REALLY need help with my patio area out front. I have dug up grass I didn't like, I thought about adding bricks but thought it would be too flat so I'm resorting to plants!! Not sure how this is going to work because I have a BLACK thumb but I'm gonna give it a shot and since everyone says it needs plants, I'm giving it plants, lol!! Anyways, can you give me any ideas on what plants to put where? I was thinking of lining the walkway with liriope? I already dug up the topiaries (the uncut things on the columns) and was going to put them in a pot on each side of the garage but come to find out they are diseased ridden and have been tossed. So I was thinking privet or (something else, can't remember the name right now) for the pots cut into swirl topiaries? I also cut down the bushes on the right under neath the glass block window. They are pentas, do you think I should keep them their? Any suggestions and ideas would be TOTALLY APPRECIATED!!!
Thanks everyone!
