semi-privacy planting on spllit rail fence

We recently installed split rail fencing along 150' curb by our back-yard. A vacant lot serves as our large backyard. It borders a cul-de-sac with very nice neighbors. We want some interesting, partial, neighborly privacy. While it is our back yard, it faces the fronts of four of our neighbors' houses.

There is eight feet between our split-rail fence and the curb. All of it is sunny. We have plenty room behind the fence for further planting. I don't want lots of maintenance, and would like lots of interest and color, (with occasional peeks through the mature plantings.)

White climber roses? Morning glories? Window boxes added onto the edges of your fence? Rose bushes? Irises? Herbs? Right now anything goes! It looks nice.
