Front area ideas?

I would appreciate ideas for what to do with this spot. It is in the front of my house, and gets direct sunlight. I was thinking about some kind of evergreen shrub, but after that, I don't know. Maybe a flower bed, but I am afraid that will leave the area too bare looking when the flowers are not in bloom. Any ideas?
