Front yard design advice?

Hello, I'm new to this forum AND to gardening. We've been tearing out sections of our lawn one at a time, and experimenting with various plants...learning a LOT!!!!

Around the side of the house will be a drought tolerant lawn, but the front yard will have no lawn at all. that's periwinkle under the pine tree, with a dry creekbed just beyond, planted with Hostas.

As you can see from the photo, our lawn is now almost completely dead. we are renting a sod cutter next week to remove all of it, and begin tilling in compost to get ready for planting our xeriscape.

Any ideas of where to go from here in our design? I bought some Carl Foerster grass and some more of the Blue Fescue, also I have a couple of flats of Wooly Thyme along with a few other Thymes to add interest, for a Thyme lawn in the middle, with some more flagstone as stepping stones throughout. I'd appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

thanks!
