Grass will definitely grow where a stump has been ground out. Is it in a spot in your front yard where establishing a flower bed makes any sense? I just have never been one to polka dot up a lawn with flower beds unless they have some compelling reason to be there - my particular bias. Others' mileage may vary.

Just keep in mind if the trunk itself does indeed have a diameter of 4', the grinding out process is going to make one quite large empty spot. A little raking, a little leveling and refilling and you've got a good spot for a grass grow over.

I just had a 42" diameter maple stump ground for a client. Make sure you find out from the contractor how deep he's going, and how thoroughly he's going to address the massive root mass extending out from the stump. The tree guy we used only got down 8-12" and essentially created a carved maple salad bowl in the yard.

If it's ground deep enough you should be able to get grass to grow there, just be aware that you (or someone you hire) will need to rake out the chips from the grinding, dispose of them, and bring in decent soil. That pulpy mess isn't going to be good for much.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think of asking how deep they got. I may go with the grass after all.

We are having several trees removed, and thanks to this thread, we did ask how deep he will grind, and the answer was 7'. These are very large trees! Two LiquidAmbers, and an unknown that's leaning and could cause damage to a deck.

You shouldn't have a problem getting grass to grow in the space where your stump used to be. But are you having your stump professionally removed, or doing it yourself? I suggest that you get it professionally removed (unless you really know what you are doing) because some parts of the process can be a bit tricky.
