Need slope advice!

Why is a slope so hard to make look good.

As pictured, I have a hedge along the boundary at top of slope. Initially I planted the whole slope with the same plant (lilly pilly) hedge but it didnt look good so I clipped them all back and left the hedge at the back and stumps in the front. I was going to topiary the remaining hedge stumps but I feel that the towering trees behind need support in the form of a few small trees. I did try tropical birch but there is not enough water for these to work in this area. I need a similar oblong shape tree or maybe pyramidal trees but I am not sure. The slope lacks water and has full sun half of the day. I appreciate any advice.

I am going to remove than xanadu plants on top of the wall and replace with nadina domestica.
