I'm assuming you're only talking about the courtyard inside the gate. How much sun is there? Do both sides of the walkway get equal sun? Will the children leave the landscaping alone, or do you need something kid-proof?

Given the brief " I have kids now and need something that is low maintenance" this is an idea that should not be shared. Totally stupid. All it needs is a cat for the kids to throw gravel at and it is picture perfect.

I suspect, Ink, that the issue is that those pots need watering and that's something she'd now rather not need to be bothered with, and would prefer plants in the ground that will not need a lot of attention...? I know zip about what would grow in Florida so have no other opinions on the matter :-)

Just a few cents. take it for what its worth. without knowing budget, or who, contractor or yourself will be doing the job, decorative paver with slightly raised soldiers on the edge, low maintenance plantings or art projects that your kids have made, stone medium or a day at the beach to collect shells. lots of different ideas, just tough to figure out the personality of the job to match that of the owner.
